Terms and conditions and privacy policy – Story Checkers

Private consumer/Individual

By using Story Checkers, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service. There are no accounts: these terms apply each time you start an analysis.

1. Who we are

We are the controller of the personal data we process in the context of the service. For questions, complaints or requests about your data, you can email contact@storycheckers.be.

2. What the service does

You upload a video or audio (or paste a link). We convert the spoken text into a transcript and add an extensive analysis to it. The service is intended for personal use.

3. Privacy – our starting point

Privacy is the central starting point of Story Checkers. We process as little data as possible, for as short a time as possible.

What we process and for how long:

To carry out the analysis, we use external factors.

These processors may process data outside the European Union (for example in the United States). This is done on the basis of the legal safeguards of the GDPR, such as an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses. They process the data in accordance with their own terms for business customers. We conclude the required data processing agreements and configure the services so that your data is not used to train AI models.

Legal basis

We process the data to carry out the analysis you pay for (performance of the contract) and to comply with legal obligations. For people who can be seen or heard in the video, we rely on the consent you obtained beforehand (see point 5).

3a. Learning to get better. To improve the service, we keep anonymous quality lessons after each analysis: only codes and numbers (for example how long the analysis took or how many claims could not be checked). They contain no names, no videos and no transcripts.

4. Your rights to the content

Your video, audio and story remain yours (or the creator’s). We acquire no ownership of or permanent licence to them. We use them only to carry out the requested analysis and do not publish or share them, except with the processors in point 3 and if the law requires us to. To protect your privacy, everything is deleted after our agreement has been completed.

5. Videos of others and prohibited use

If you upload a video or link in which someone else can be seen or heard, you must have that person’s explicit consent beforehand. You are responsible for what you upload and for what you do with the results, and you must have the rights to use the content (for example copyright or portrait rights).

You may not use Story Checkers to:

In case of misuse, we may refuse you access and, if the law requires it, notify the competent authorities.

6. Age

You must be at least 18 years old to use Story Checkers. By using the service, you confirm that you are 18 or older.

7. Payment and right of withdrawal

You pay per analysis via Bancontact, card, Google Play or PayPal, depending on which system we offer at any given time. There is no subscription and nothing is charged automatically or on a recurring basis.

As a consumer, you in principle have a 14-day right of withdrawal. For a digital service that has been fully performed, this right may lapse if, before the start, you expressly consented to immediate performance and confirmed that you know you lose your right of withdrawal once the analysis has been fully performed.

If an analysis fails due to a technical error on our side, please contact us via contact@storycheckers.be.

8. Free test analysis

You can try Story Checkers for free once. The free test analysis is valid for one analysis per person; every subsequent analysis is paid.

To prevent misuse, we ask for your email address. Your email address, IP address and device are not stored as such, but made unrecognisable (hashed), so that we can only check whether a free test has already been used. We do not use your email address for advertising and do not pass it on to third parties.

The free test analysis includes a shortened fact check (1 claim) and no deepfake check; otherwise, the same elements apply as for a paid analysis. The free test analysis is offered without any guarantee. We may change or discontinue the free offer at any time. In case of attempted misuse (for example multiple email addresses or circumventing the check), we may refuse the free test or access.

8bis. Temporary free offer

During a temporary free offer (announced as “Temporarily free” on the website) you can do a check without paying: at most 1 free check per e-mail address per day, as long as the daily number of free checks has not been reached. After that, “Today’s free checks are used up, try again tomorrow” is shown. Your e-mail address is required and is stored only in hashed (unrecognisable) form to enforce this; we do not send you advertising without your separate consent. A free check contains the same shortened analysis as the free test analysis. We may change or end the offer at any time, without compensation. There is no right to a free check.

9. Liability

We do our best to make Story Checkers work well and securely, but we cannot guarantee that the service will always be available or error-free. We are not liable for decisions you make based on a result, or for damage caused by the use of content for which you had no consent or rights. Otherwise, our liability is limited to the amount you paid for the analysis concerned, to the extent permitted by law.

These elements do not apply in case of intent, gross negligence or fraud on our part, and do not affect your mandatory rights as a consumer under Belgian law.

10. Changes

We may change these terms. The new version is always available online. An analysis is governed by the terms that applied at the moment you started and paid for it.

11. Neutrality

We never make a choice and never take sides in any local or international conflict.

12. Applicable law and disputes

These terms are governed by Belgian law. In case of a dispute, we will first look for a solution together: email us at contact@storycheckers.be. If that does not work, you can turn to the Consumer Ombudsman Service (www.consumentenombudsdienst.be) or the Belgian courts have jurisdiction. You always retain the protection offered to you by the consumer law of your place of residence.

For professional users of the separate section of the website, other terms apply; these can be read there.
